On a budget European trip with his wife, Tim Leatherman found he never had the right tools for quick fixes from roadside breakdowns to faulty hotel plumbing. Because what he needed didn't exist, he returned to the United States to build the multi-tool he wanted. Eight years and many rejections later, he finally had a tool he was proud of. And in 1983 with the first order of 500, the Leatherman Tool Group, Inc. was born.
